Perceptions of Lewisham and Southwark College
Strong campus identity
The students at both colleges in the main seemed proud to be students at Lewisham and Southwark College. The Waterloo students were keen to stress the emphasis on which campus they attended slightly more than those at the Lewisham campus, but the Lewisham students still had a positive campus identity that they felt differentiated them from the Waterloo students.
Chance for independence
The students were keen to point out the level of independence gained from attending at Lewisham and Southwark College versus staying on at their school sixth form. The chance for change and a new chapter was perceived to be much greater at the college.
Tutors — inspiring, experienced and supportive
It was a pleasure to hear the great feedback about the tutors at the college — they are especially well respected by the students. They said that they were willing to help when it was needed and they always made time to talk to them.
Safety & support
Leading on from the example of the tutors, the college staff were perceived to be a great support network. Often going beyond and helping students with guidance for life in college and at home, providing a real personal touch. The campus’ are considered to be places the students can be themselves and relax in safety, which can be a contrast to some areas of their home lives in certain cases.
